Where Pellet Grills Sit

That is not a knock on pellets; pellets are denser and pack more consistent heat per pound into a controller-driven fire, and the trade-off shows up as convenience and consistency rather than fuel savings. A 12-hour cook needs roughly 7.2 pounds of lump or 8.6 pounds of briquettes with reserve, against 14.4 pounds of pellets — different numbers for a genuinely different kind of fire, not a straightforward “better or worse.”
Where Electric and Gas Sit Outside Both Models
Electric and gas smokers do not appear in either calculator, and the reason is structural rather than an oversight: neither tool models a heating element or a gas burner because neither one combusts wood or charcoal as its heat source at all. An electric smoker’s running cost is mostly its electricity draw, and any wood involved is a small tray or box of chips added purely for flavor, replenished occasionally rather than fed continuously like an offset’s firebox or a pellet grill’s auger. That makes electric the lowest-complexity, typically lowest-cost option of the group to run, at the cost of the mildest, least complex smoke flavor of any style discussed here.
Noise, Smell, and Being a Good Neighbor
Fuel and wood use are not the only practical differences worth weighing. A pellet grill's auger motor and fan produce a low, continuous hum that some people never notice and others find mildly annoying over a long cook. An offset running heavy, especially on a still evening, can produce visibly more smoke drifting across a shared fence line than a kamado running the same cook at a lower wood-consumption factor. Neither is a reason to rule out a style, but if you share close outdoor space with neighbors, it is worth factoring in alongside the fuel numbers above.
Which Numbers Actually Improve With Better Technique
Not every gap between smoker types closes with skill. Where This Comparison Doesn’t Apply: Grilling and Searing
Everything above is scoped to low-and-slow smoking, where cook length runs into the many hours and fuel efficiency compounds over that whole window. High-heat grilling and searing are a different regime entirely — short cooks measured in minutes, where a kamado's slow-to-adjust ceramic mass is actually a minor disadvantage versus a fast-responding grill, and where an offset's firebox is rarely even involved since most offsets are not built with searing as their primary function. Reading the Comparison Honestly
None of these numbers say one smoker style is objectively better — they say what each style actually costs you in fuel and attention for a given result, which is a different question from which one tastes best or fits your schedule. An offset’s higher wood consumption buys the deepest, most complex smoke flavor most pitmasters chase; a kamado’s efficiency buys long, steady cooks on very little fuel; a pellet grill’s single predictable fuel stream buys consistency; and an electric smoker’s near-total lack of combusted fuel buys the lowest-effort, lowest-cost path to a safely cooked meal.
Electric’s Fuel Story Is the Simplest of All
It is worth stating plainly just how different electric's fuel picture is from the other three. There is no bag of charcoal to buy, no hopper to fill, and no wood-chunk count to plan around beyond an occasional small tray of chips added purely for flavor accent. The entire "fuel" question collapses to an electricity draw that runs for however long the cook takes, which is part of why electric smokers are frequently the choice for anyone who wants the mechanics of buying and managing fuel to simply not be part of their weekend.
Startup Fuel Is a Separate Line Item
None of the burn-rate figures above include what it takes to get a fire going in the first place, and that startup cost varies by style too. A charcoal smoker needs a chimney's worth of lit coals before the main fuel bed even begins, which is a small but real fixed cost on every single cook, short or long. A pellet grill's auger and igniter handle startup automatically from a cold hopper, drawing a short burst of extra electricity but no separate fire-starting fuel. Electric and gas units light in seconds with no separate startup fuel at all. On a short cook, that fixed startup overhead is proportionally larger for charcoal than it is on a long overnight brisket, where it barely registers against the total.

A single cook's fuel difference between smoker types looks modest in isolation, but it compounds over a season of regular weekends. A household running a weekly 8-hour medium-intensity cook on an offset rather than a kamado is buying roughly double the supplemental wood, week after week, purely from the smoker-type multiplier discussed above — before even accounting for the offset's typically higher charcoal or wood consumption as its primary heat source too. None of that makes the offset the wrong choice; it simply means the ongoing cost difference between styles is worth weighing against the sticker price difference when you are shopping, not just the upfront purchase price.
Insulation Accessories Shift These Numbers
Aftermarket insulating blankets and jackets exist for pellet grills and thinner offsets specifically to close some of the efficiency gap with a kamado's built-in ceramic mass, and they measurably reduce fuel consumption in cold or windy weather by cutting how much heat escapes through the cooker's walls.
